The feast of the Immaculate Conception is the official day for decorating and starting Christmas in Rome. However, this year things seem to be up early (apparently to encourage more Christmas shopping to boost the economy). Lights up everywhere, and there is a giant Christmas tree up in the piazza of the parish down the street from me. The pastori (shepherds) are out as of today with their bagpipes playing Italy's favorite Christmas carol, "Tu scendi dalle stelle". And there seem to have been some parades and shows to officially open the season.
I'll add photos later, but now I'm making supper.

Thanks for linking to the video that has the carol's words, in Italian and English. Now I've listened to so many versions that the tune is stuck in my head. Are you a fan of the bagpipes?
