One of my favorite stories regarding St. Francis de Sales, the gentle doctor of the Church, concerns his temper. It is easier to catch flies with honey than with vinegar, he reminds us. And, after his death, it was observed that there were claw marks under his desk, where this bishop of Geneva had dug his fingernails rather than speak a harsh word to one who tried his patience. It is also said of him that sometimes, when he could not control himself well enough, he would send the person out for a bit and hide himself in the curtains until he could speak civilly and invite the person back in the room.
I really admire how he was able to relate to so many people in so many walks of life--heretics, laymen, religious, priests. He spoke to all, so that each could feel he addressed him personally. And it is comforting to read his Introduction to the Devout Life, and his Art of Loving God to see how sanctity is attainable for all of us.
So today especially I ask him to pray for me that I may persevere in my new resolutions, and move closer daily to sanctity in ordinary life.
St. Francis de Sales, pray for us!
