Right now in Rome, paper hats are all the rage. Unfortunately, I don't have pictures, though I'm sure they can be found on the web. (and in fact, here's a link, and here's another one)
It's hot and sunny in Rome, and hats help very much. So at almost every corner one sees a vendor selling paper hats. And you can also find them in all the junk souvenir shops. Of course, the hats are made in China, and they look cheap, but for a few days of travelling around, they really are quite useful. Thus, many of the tourists you see in Rome are wearing paper hats these days. They come in fedoras, floppy broad-brimmed, cowboy, and many other shapes, in various sizes and colors.
And the vendors will quote a price, or may go for the strategy of first asking how much you're willing to pay. Usually, the asking price is not the final one. And one can find these paper hats marked for around 10 -15 euro.
Native Italians tend to wear nicer hats. Or to stay inside during this awful heat.

The occasional origamist in me wants to know: these hats, are they folded or moulded? or is it something else entirely?
It seems to be something else entirely. Paper twisted and woven into various hat shapes, as if it were straw...
