Rome is well-known for its stray cat colonies, often cared for by the gattare--cat ladies, and well-exemplified by the Torre Argentina Cat Sanctuary. Almost any given set of ruins comes with its own stray cat colony, and if you stare long enough you're likely to see a few of the felines. Stray dogs aren't very common, though pet dogs running around the city are quite common enough. What I found odd was, walking along to the dentist, passing a baseball field (a rare enough specimen in a country ruled by soccer!) filled not with stray cats, but...
